Small ant, large appetite!

A small ant (Allomerus decemarticulatus) that lives in the Amazon rainforest has been found to produce a ‘medieval rack’ like trap to capture its food. Using their own hairs, plant material and a fungus they construct a trap that has many holes in it. When the intended victims appendage goes down these holes the ants that are hiding in them grip hold of the appendage with their mandibles. Then a small action group of worker ants arrive to bite and sting the victim. They are then chopped up and carried back to the nest.

Wow, I mean can you imagine that! Thank god insects don’t grow to huge proportions because I know that I would hate to be killed by putting my foot in the wrong place!!
