Dam thoese Dam's
As a regular subscriber to ‘New Scientist’ email I often see articles that interest me! Training as a primary school teacher you would except at some point I might do a project on hydro-electric dams. This is often the case when you are trying to teach children about saving the environment and reusable energy sources but a recent study shows that these dams may be causing more harm to our environment!
Studying A level geography I often had to look at both sides of an argument and we found that these dams have there good qualities and there bad ones. Some of the bad points being that you have to destroy large areas of habitats etc. this study showed that as tress are Carbon sinks (they store carbon) when you first flood an area this Carbon is released as they rot! Then the rotted matter falls to the reservoir floor to decompose further. Without oxygen being present in the water, methane is produced and trapped (dissolved) in the water. As water leaves the reservoir through the turbines the methane is release.
It’s long been known that methane has an effect on our environment and on global warming. In fact methane is 21 times stronger than carbon dioxide in its effects on global warming! So now we have to ask ourselves, ‘Do hydro-electric dams solve our environmental concerns or are they adding to them?’ I’m sure as more research is done into the matter scientist and governments will decide weather they are going to continue with the hydro-electric plan or scrap it for a more environmental sound idea. But it just goes to show that just when we think we have solved a big environmental problem we are proved wrong.
