Histroy Boys

Every now and again the trepid explorer ‘Fox’ will venture out from his urban living to explore the great unknown. In a recent venture Fox, with his companion Helen, ventured to the far east. This perilous mission involved multiple means of transport, but after much hassle and fear arrived at his destination. Sixfields!

Yes, on a calm cool night me and my good chum Helen went to the 2nd class cinema at Sixfields. Out of preference I would of chosen Vue, with its better quality chairs and the ergonomic design, which is vastly superior to Cineworld or whatever it is called now.

Anyway, we went to watch a film. History boys, which started off as a Broadway/stage production. This film though well known has now hit the big screen and is receiving a mixed review. It is suppose to show what teaching use to be like. But I think the underlining theme was to show the abuse of power. Though this film is great, the subject of the film mixed with humour makes it ok BUT if a teacher was to do what happened in the film we would be wanting blood and punishment. But please, when you go watch this fantastic British film. Go watch it for its humour, good acting and tremendous twists and not for the abuse of power a teacher has over children.

Dissertation

One of the most important times in a university students life is when they ask you to start thinking about you dissertation title. This one assignment holds a good percentage of your final grade level. Considering we have another year to go yet they suggest you start thinking about and reading towards you dissertation.

I’ve come up with 8 different ideas so far. A couple were blown out the water straight away as I was told that I was not writing for a ‘Masters Degree’. One of the ideas I’ve had for the last month or two was writing about teaching evolution in primary school. Although this is a huge subject it may be possible. But again early last week I decided against this title too as well in favour for my third choice of physical disabilities and science practical’s. In theory I was interested in the importance of practical’s in science and do children with physical problems (like those that cant control limb movements) have a disadvantage because they may not be able to carry out the experiments that often need fine motor controls. Does this effect their education? Or even their enjoyment of science? Love to know what some people think about this. Oh, and I’m really hoping I don’t manage to offend people!

Calorific heaven for the glutinous parts of our mentality.

Feed up with the ever srinking candy bars, sweets and chocolates? Like me your properly in two minds about this, the first thing I thought was are the sweets and chocolate bars I eat as a child getting smaller or does it seem that way because I’m growing bigger. Well its been proven that the candies etc are in fact not nearly as big as they use to be, so when on the radio today they mentioned this they also mentioned a solution.

Yes the solution has arrived! In the form of a web site and a unique was of solving the problem. And trust me at the first opportunity that presents itself I’m going to be trying this out!!

http://www.pimpmysnack.com/

Look it up and find the snack as you had it as a child and find ways to make it a lot larger. Mmmmmmmmmmm huge wagon wheel, yummy. Image having one of those in your pack lunch!

The 9 hour religious education trip

Yes the title is correct us poor university students had to go on a RE trip as part of a foundation subject. 9 hours of touring dusty old musty smelling ruins being sermoned too by religious fanatics, this is what I thought before the trip started. In fact for the most part the experience was a good one. The challenge was to visit 4 different religious sights, talk to the curator/or the person that shows you around and then be back by 6.30pm. throughout the day we was expected to absorb some religious knowledge and become enthused about it so when we come to teach this in school we would show the proper respect. So the tour begins in the ‘Shree Sanatan Mandir’ Hindu place of worship. Something that should have been known by our RE tutor was that this day was of special significances, it was a solar eclipse so the main temple, which we had come to see, was off limits to ALL people. So instead, we had to sit listening to this well-intentioned guy for 40 mins. As happens this gave we time to start daydreaming and in my usual dreamy stupor I started taking in the room at large. It had been decorated with the up most care but was showing signs of ware. Apparently it use to be a church but was surplus to requirements so got past into there hands. As this person went on about the religion he belonged to and its importance I noticed the paintings and statues of some of the gods these people believed in. people would come in and show there respect and then lay a gift/ offering in front of these icons. But soon it was time to leave (phew) and move onto our next port of call, the ‘Guru Nanak Gurdwara’.

This is a sheik place of worship, as in the last temple we took off our shoes but here we had to wash our hands as well. We were shown into the prayer hall by a lady guide. She was very nice and explained everything as we went through. To show our respect we was asked to go up to the altar and bow our head.

We sat and waited as she explains what took place here. This was followed by the offering of sugar crystals/nuts and seeds. Once the prayer book had been placed on the altar, we were allowed to walk around the back to observe this book. After this had been completed by all we proceeded upstairs to the onsite museum. This museum had old example of the prayer book. There was also on display;

  • Coins (with the worlds smallest coin)
  • Examples of traditional clothes
  • Photos
  • The Five K’s
  • Musical instruments
  • Scaled models of temples in India
  • A large collection of paintings

After the chance to look around we was shown to the main food hall where they kindly provide lunch everyday to everybody that arrives. It was a nice meal and gave us chance to try some different foods.

Next we went to visit Omar Masjid which is a mosque. This was a large modern building with classrooms for the children. It had extremely plush carpets, which are specially made which something like 5 times the stitching involved. Some of the high lights of this building were the Arabic on the walls that took a 60-year-old man 6 weeks to complete in the building and the chandelier which was paid for by one person but has NO religious significance other than to decorate this place of worship, looked even better when it was turned on.

Our last port of call as a Jewish Synagogue. This place was my most favourite. Even though this place was no where as big as the others or as posh or as wealthy, and had far fewer members there was a spirit about the place. Trust me when I say it had a glow about it. It was amazing and I was disappointed that we could on spend 30 mins there. The two people there told of there beliefs and the community they have. However, they also told us of there communities history. They had no problems in telling us that they were a declining religion, as they do not actively recruit. The older guy had the same glow about him as the building. Have to say there social calendar was impressive and there community celebrations and get together’s sounds like something to envy.

I have no religion. If you had to label it, I think I would be an atheist. I have no idea what’s out there. I’m just waiting and trying to find myself. Religion for me is not how you show it or the label you put on it but instead something within yourself, something you feel.

Question for consideration : What does a general tidy up mean?

Have you ever wondered what sort of occupation you could have where you could talk all day, control someones else’s life and social life, where you can handle dangerous if not lethal equipment, and get paid a great hourly rate for the privilege. No I’m not talking about doctors or physics’ playing with quantum physics or partial accelerators but the humble hairdresser. Today after 6 weeks of consideration, soul-searching, surveying of friends and family I decided to go to the hairdressers. Until that very last moment when I crossed over the threshold I still could not decided what to have done. Should I to the delight of my mother return to the shorter haircut which is normal, easily managed and smart or stay with the highly temperamental longer hair with morning afro. Finally a comment said to me by two separate people came to mind ‘Its very Darcy like Darrel’, now I’ve personally never watched Pride and Predigest but I’ve been told that this is a good comment. So upon crossing that imaginary threshold the one thought on my mind is “keep the cut!”. The lady was very nice with all the pleasantries you expect from our 20 min meeting. Upon asking what I wanted done I replied, ‘just a general tidy up please’ she agreed and the race was on. After 5 mins she had completed transverse my head and taken of half an inch of growth and thinned it out a little. It looked good I thought. After 10 mins she had completed the back and sides. WOW I thought she is fast and can cut well, I was pleased with the look. But martial artist with scissors was not finished yet. She completely went over my head again and this time took another inch off. I thought she knew what she was doing. After 20 mins she had finished and I find that my hair length had no been tidied up BUT completely changed to a sort hairstyle. So to all my friends, been prepared because the Darcy curls and multi-inch hair has been left, rotting like a corpse on a battle field, on the hairdressers floor.

Who is the Mystery Messageer?

Well someone left a message saying where are you? Would have been really helpful if I knew who that person was because then I could reply J Right so what been going on in my life, the most important topic at the moment for me is, which teachers planning site do I join? I mean I use a few to give me ideas and that are free like http://www.teachingideas.co.uk/ but now I’m thinking of upgrading to a pay site like the Hamilton Trust at http://www.hamilton-trust.org.uk/index.asp?id=1 or another one recommended today was Click Teaching at http://www.clickteaching.com/ not very interesting I know but here we go. But if I ever have any problems I can always have the free plans from the government http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/.

Its Easter people. That’s right the time to eat chocolate, until you see brown dots in front of your eyes, has arrived. A time to gorge yourself with little repercussions until you next meet your friend with no kwarms about saying how much weight you have put on. But this Easter I’m going to be a good boy and catch up on all my forgotten work and try and complete my lacking folders of evidence. Yes people Darrel Fox is going to do … is going to do … Some work!!!

Other things to be done this week are;

  • To go walking at Brixworth and drag along a friend of mine to introduce her to the wonderful walking area.
  • To research a little more about the teacher planning websites.
  • To continue my art sketch book and medium term plan ready for assessment.
  • To catch up with my Young wizard forum and My space.

Have a Great Easter everyone xx
